The San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens

Congratulations to the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens for making to the 2013 Super Bowl. It was a great weekend for both teams.

49ers Super Bowl

Our #1 ranked sportsbook for betting the Super Bowl for 3 straight years —>

The 49ers won, but they didn’t cover. They were favored by 6, and only won by 4.
The Ravens won and they easily covered. They were 7.5 point underdogs against the Patriots, and the first team that was more than 7 point underdogs to win both the division and championship playoff rounds. It looks like Las Vegas undervalued Baltimore in the playoffs.

Right now the 49ers are favored by 4 to win the Super Bowl. It’s a very interesting line. It’s more than a field goal and less than a touchdown.

The over/under opened at 49 points. It has since been bet down to 47.5 points. The early bettors like the under, while the public tends to root for points. More points make for a more exciting game, and the public is in it for the excitement. Of course these two teams have great defenses, and that’s probably why the early “sharp” bettors jumped on the under.

The Super Bowl is dominated by the betting public. It’s the most heavily bet game every year. So many people bet on this game that the so called “expert” bettors only make up a small part of the action. Because of this it’s important to look at each team’s fan base.

San Francisco is a very public team. They’ve been good over the past several years, Quest For Sixthey have a loyal fan base and people like to bet on them. The 49ers have a lot of fans from when they were good in the 90s. People remember the Joe Montana and Steve Young days and will still root for and bet on this team for that reason alone. The 49ers also covered a lot of games vs the spread this year, so they’ve made people a lot of money. Those bettors might continue to bet this team in the Super Bowl.

Baltimore_RavensThe Ravens are hot right now, but they don’t get a lot of support from the betting public. That could be the reason why the 49ers are favored. Of course anything can happen over the next couple of weeks, and we could see more money being bet on the Ravens than the 49ers, especially since they’re underdogs.

These teams match up well. There are coached by two brothers who grew up looking at the game in the same way. Both teams are built to play hard hitting NFL football. They both have good quarterbacks and great defenses. The 49ers have Colin Kaepernick who can run and throw the ball, but is young and inexperienced in the playoffs and the NFL. The Ravens have Joe Flacco who might not have as much raw talent as Kaepernick, but he’s an experienced leader who is used to being in the spotlight.

On defense Baltimore is lead by Ray Lewis. This 16 year veteran is a key part of their RayLewis_Ravens_Super_Bowldefense. Although Wes Welker’s wife may not like him, he’s a true leader on the football field. His experience and defensive play calling should serve the Ravens well on that side of the ball.

Almost $100 million was bet on last year’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas. This is most heavily bet game every year. Experts say that hundreds of millions (maybe even billions) are also bet with offshore sports books and local bookies.

These bets are most on the spread, the money line or the over/under, but there are also hundreds of prop bets offered on the Super Bowl. You can bet on almost anything, from who will win the coin toss to how many yards Kaepernick will run for. For the last several years you could even bet on what color the Gatorade will be that be dumped on the winning coach.

The Las Vegas casinos have only lost on one Super Bowl in the last 10 years. In 2008 bettors gambled $92 million and casinos lost $2.57 million when the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 17-14. Vegas has won even other year.
